Background: Together, Global Optimism and Amazon developed the Climate Pledge, a bold commitment for businesses to meet the Paris Agreement goals ten years early. We worked with both organizations to build a platform that gives businesses the information they need to plan and make their own commitment. The platform casts a spotlight on current signatories—and the actions they’re taking to become net-zero carbon by 2040—to inspire an audience of business leaders to bring their own brands on board.

Larger picture: The platform is an always-on activation that continues to evolve as signatories unveil new commitments and as the pledge reaches new milestones. Audio interviews invite visitors to hear from leaders of the world’s biggest, most disruptive companies about what the pledge means to them—and soon, the platform will house our documentary-style series profiling signatories.

Core features: Tracking the progress of the pledge and its signatories. By doing so, we create a center of responsibility that builds commitment and adds to the success of the pledge. This is shown in the “Our Progress” timeline, which lets you travel forward in time to foresee the accomplishment of signatory companies to achieve carbon neutrality. Over time, the platform will grow to become a robust, comprehensive source of information that tracks the actions, progress and breakthroughs of the pledge’s signatories through 2040.

Visually, we wanted to create an aesthetic that would last. We convey a feeling of urgency inspired by borrowing a familiar layout and font usage from the editorial press supported by ownable, collage-style illustrations. We intentionally avoided a clean, clinical aesthetic, instead cultivating rich, grainy textures and iconography that feel more connected to the ambition of the project: creating a world where humans and nature live in harmony.

Favorite details: The platform is a great combination of different disciplines coming together. Craft meets commitment to make carbon history. The site’s informational content and revolutionary design match the ambitious goal of the pledge it stands for.

Challenges: We placed a lot of effort on working with the Climate Pledge to get every piece of content in good shape. This is especially true for updates to the progress timeline. But the work truly paid off—we’re very proud to showcase the continuous updates and achievements of signatories, now and into the future.

Time constraints: In order to ensure the project would be at its best at launch, we first released an MVP version of just the homepage in the summer of 2020. From there, we built out the platform through the end of the year with a full release in Adobe Experience Manager. This opened the door to integrating even more features and content authoring capabilities, which enriched the user experience and gave a solid base to the platform that will be used over a long period of time.

Technology: The site was built for Adobe Experience Manager with a front end based on MediaMonks’s proprietary front-end framework Muban to achieve the level of design sophistication and back-end compatibility with Typescript.
