Background: The website is a showcase for the work we do at our letterpress studio, The Counter Press. Our audience is wide—ranging from designers and writers to brands and publishers—so we created a website that appealed to lots of different users.
Highlights: The design of the site is clean and simple with big hero images, allowing the work to stand out. The soft neutral tones and small pops of bright color used throughout the site have been chosen to reflect our approach to our letterpress work. Even though it’s a website, it feels tactile, capturing the traditional side of what we do in a contemporary way.
Challenges: We usually design for print, so creating a website meant learning a whole new set of skills that doesn’t involve hand set wood type.
Navigational structure: We wanted the website to be easy to navigate, so having the page navigation on display at the top of the page was important. It’s not a large website, so we didn’t feel that drop down menus or anything complicated was needed.
Time constraints: As the website was for ourselves, there were no time constraints in the design and build. Much like our letterpress work, we find that by giving ourselves the luxury of time, we arrive at a better result than if we had rushed to meet a self-imposed deadline.
Technical features: It’s based on a Squarespace template, which we’ve customized to suit our style and go beyond just being an off-the-shelf portfolio site.
