The Lord of the Rings’ treacherous landscapes and gripping battles come to life in this interactive map and game, The Hobbit: A Journey through Middle Earth. The result of a two-year collaboration between Google, Warner Bros. and agency North Kingdom, a 3-D map shows 21 locations in Middle Earth, including eight characters’ paths and quotes. The WebGL map works on both desktop and mobile, so users can follow Frodo to Mount Doom even on their smartphones. To improve the game’s performance, the team used Level-of-Detail streaming, dynamically rendering more detail closer to the camera. Ambient music reminiscent of the soundtrack adds to the drama. In another portal, a WebRTC-based battle game allows players to fight thousands of simultaneous players for the King of the Hill title on five separate battlegrounds, including the Lonely Mountain and the Black Gate. Players can challenge their friends to a duel, all while exploring the Shire.
