Los Angeles–based creative agency Trainrobber produces brand storytelling using virtual reality and 360-degree filmmaking. Interactive designer Bryan James created a portfolio site that showcases the agency’s projects and capabilities. The site's visuals harken back to the Old West with the main graphic treatment being a plume of smoke, as if it was spiraling from the barrel of a pistol. “This treatment was technically challenging,” says James. “We fused inline HTML5 looping video and blend modes to have letterforms of project names and director profile photos masking the pluming smoke.” Transitions between each page appear as sweeping smoke, also made from HTML5 videos and blend modes that were alternately applied to make black or white appear invisible. James built the site in Perch, a lightweight CMS that enables the Trainrobber team to modify new pages and case studies as they see fit.
