Hambly & Woolley developed this site with the University of Toronto to share the innovative work of the university’s researchers and their collaborations with other institutions to tackle critical challenges in the world today. The site was developed in two parts: Inside the World’s Great Questions, which contains ten stories of collaboration featuring University of Toronto-affiliated research networks; and By the Numbers, which gives different views of research data through animated graphs and charts. The site’s vertical-scrolling parallax emphasizes layered storytelling, with floating foreground graphic and text elements against full-cover background images.

In addition to making the site responsive, the developers had to ensure that it met the University of Toronto’s business requirements for usability in Internet Explorer, which can be a challenge when working with complex animated and interactive elements. Additional development was needed to meet the accessibility requirements outlined in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The extra effort was well worth the benefit of creating broad access to the University of Toronto’s work.
