Background: To create a site dedicated to design in the USSR had been an idea of ours for a long time. Our art director was looking for interesting information and photos for several months. The push to create this project came from an architect in our native city Kharkiv—some of buildings and cars that were made in Kharkiv are shown on the site.
We want USSR Design Almanac to become an online exhibition and source of inspiration for designers and all people who like design or history. Now, while we’re all staying at home, it’s the perfect time to discover new things!
Favorite details: As always, we paid a lot of attention to our animations. It became a challenge to present cool things in cool ways and bring visitors back to the site again and again, making them read additional information about everything they could see on the website.
Divergent paths: If we were starting the site over again, maybe we would not use so many photos and so many cool animations. Sometimes, the site loads slowly.
Navigation structure: The best way to make an online exhibition is with the usual storytelling using scroll. That way, it does not distract visitors from the site’s content.
Technology: Readymag is the tool that we used to create the USSR Design Almanac. No secrets in the development part!
