A film production company based in Los Angeles, Velvet sits at the nexus of commercial and art with a small but dedicated roster of filmmakers. With an identity by Sydney-based design studio Toko, Christchurch, New Zealand–based studio Sons & Co. created a quirky, bespoke portfolio site that shows off Velvet’s spirit and mission to create commercials that “aren’t shit,” as Sons & Co.’s cofounder Matt Arnold puts it. “[Velvet’s] website is deliberately unconventional—a little weird, but never boring. [The production company] comfortably mixes advertising with documentary with music with art and simply asked for a website that’s not like the others.” A circular moiré pattern makes up the center of the site—since moiré patterns tend to be the bane of production work, the site’s prominent inclusion of one speaks to the gutsy unconventionality present in Velvet’s films.
