Universidade de Coimbra, established in 1290, is one of the world’s oldest universities in continuous operation and the oldest university in Portugal. The website is a key piece of a wider international campaign strategy, as the school is also a popular tourist destination.
Overall, the design is direct and minimal, employing respectful typography and the traditional print-oriented two-column grid, while a memorable 3-D illustration—an interactive building map—leads the main page with a splash of modern fun. Hotspots on ten points of interest lead to full-page interactive panoramas, directly immersing the visitor in the building's lavishly adorned halls and rooms.
Burocratik’s goal was to offer “an effective first glimpse of all the places people can visit” and also provide alternative navigation “listing the points of interest as photos on a responsive grid system for better user experience on a big range of screen sizes.” Great attention was paid to building seamless side navigation from room to room (no back button required!) with simple fades between sections sparked by clicks, keyboard arrows and swipes (on mobile touch screens). For a full demo of the site, watch this video.
