This official tourism portal for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania promotes travel to and within the state. We’re suckers for good information design and accessible content. But if the site’s not visually satisfying we won’t stick-around. Unlike most “official” portals, this site gave us plenty of reasons to stay. What’s basically the shell for a set of trip-planning tools has an inviting and understandable interface with standard navigation processes, concise links and an engaging structure for content.

• The global navigation addresses a series of implied travel-related questions (What do I want to do? Where do I want to go? What can I do when I get there? and What about travel deals?).

• The November launch coincided with the unofficial kickoff of the winter travel season. For January and February, site traffic was up 38 percent and the average session length had increased by 15 percent.

• Zoom Maps, two image maps of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, organized by activity, are easy to use and provide two-click access to a descriptive look at everything from nightspots to hiking trails.
