It’s now more important than ever to keep making sure everyone’s voices can be heard. That’s why illustrators Wendy Macnaughton and Julia Rothman recently launched Women Who Draw, a much-needed platform for women, transwomen and gender-nonconforming illustrators. Designed by Jenny Volvovski of design firm Also, the site features an open directory of artists that can be filtered by LBTQ+, ethnic identity and religious affiliation. “For Women Who Draw, we wanted to keep the site design to a minimum so that the artists’ illustrations were the main highlight,” says Volvovski. “Having a large growing gallery of potentially thousands of artists was a big challenge, since image load was a big concern. The site is run with a Wordpress CMS and a Gravity Forms plugin that handles the artists submissions and converts them into posts that can be approved and immediately part of the directory.” Visitors can also browse interviews with featured artists and create an account to save their favorite galleries. The site received an overwhelming response with more than six million views in the first three days; so much so that “we had to close submissions to regroup and figure out how to handle both the traffic and the logistics of approving all the entries,” Volvovski says.
