The launch of this site coincides with the centenary of Yousuf Karsh’s birth and—along with a dozen exhibitions in the U.S. and Canada this year—commemorates one of the world’s most prolific and well-known portrait photographers. Unique in its breadth of coverage, it’s an intimate and personal multimedia legacy that educates its audience, provides useful historic information and promotes Karsh’s body of work.
The navigation is simple (The Work, The Man, Inquiries) and reflects the expectations of visitors while being broad enough to encompass the content and the experience. Video clips and personal photos of Karsh and his family are coupled with his photographs, and a personal commentary about each shot, to form a memorable biography of this prolific photographer.
The site’s received high praise for the navigation, the simplicity of the interface and, more than anything, its portrayal of Yousuf Karsh.
• From concept to completion, the site took five people two years to produce.
• Primary content consists of 52 images, 10 videos and several thousand words.
• There are approximately 150 files, 4 major content templates and 3 folder levels.
• The site’s received about 4,000 visitors in the 6 weeks since launch who, on average, view 14 pages and spend 6 minutes on it.
