Responses by Marco Negri, chief creative director, and Emiliano Savino, chief operations officer, PixelCrew.

Background: “Zonin1821, one of the most important Italian wine companies, was in a moment of total renovation in 2021 from its management up to its corporate image,” explains Marco Negri. “Nonetheless, the company was going to celebrate its 200th anniversary that same year. We were chosen to redesign the corporate website. After deep briefings with Chiara Bressani, then the communications and sustainability director at Zonin, we had the opportunity to explore and create a new transitional corporate image, redefining the company values and corporate manifesto through a design and brand sprint session with many functional members of the team. This enabled us to deliver a solid corporate website and a brand-new corporate presentation aimed at an audience of corporate stakeholders.

“We are very proud to say that we have recently been awarded an Honorable Mention by Awwwards, a real blessing for us,” Negri continues. “We also gained Zonin’s trust to continue on this path and develop a brand sprint to realize the websites for its different estates, which we are currently working on through a dedicated design system.”

Favorite details: “From a stylistic point of view, we’re proud to have managed to make different styles coexist: brutalist design mixed with minimalism and some vintage connotations, the overall outcome showing each style’s own expression,” says Negri. “To reach this result, we spent the most time and effort researching the color palette, iconography, photography and typography.”

Challenges: “Creating a context for the website through diverse content from company history, different estates and wines, and sustainability, it was particularly challenging putting together a design system in which all pages could fit and mix,” says Negri. “We wanted to create a nice dynamism without losing the pages’ specificities. Also, another challenge lay in ‘digesting’ a relevant amount of information and creating a flowing story.

“I think a key success factor was working with an open-minded client who has been available to guide us and allow us to guide them through a magical journey,” Negri continues. “The design sprint challenge included bringing out some intangible aspects linked to Zonin’s values and mission, which we could then represent on the website.”

Navigation structure: “Our effort was to keep a simple structure, despite a large amount of content on the site,” says Negri. “Our biggest challenge was to make a traditional hamburger menu while also creating a strong storytelling within the internal pages to guide and call the user to action with an emotional, involving story that would keep them stuck to their screen.”

Technology: ”We used WordPress in a totally customized way, developing the theme from scratch,” says Emiliano Savino. “This approach has an MVC structure. The architecture is Bedrock to make the website even safer. For the front end, we used webpack and Twig. All the components were developed through the ad hoc design system. For animations, we used GSAP.”
